101 uses for tyres
Once your tyres are worn out, there are plenty of uses for them. Aside from being rather good at making vehicles of all descriptions move smoothly, tyres are remarkably versatile objects. They can be recycled or used as components in creating various weird and wonderful things, such as:
- a good old-fashioned tyre swing.
- growing potatoes – simply add another tyre to the pile as your plants grow taller
- retaining walls for gardens and steep land – this prevents erosion and can create a sheltered area.
- buffers and bumpers for a go-kart course.
- many eco-friendly companies now recycle tyres into a huge range of products including notebooks, sandals, bags, furniture and even sculptures.
- garden edging – tyres cut in half and sunk into the ground make a robust edging for flower beds.
- building materials – whole houses have been constructed using recycled tyres (one was featured on Grand Designs a few years ago). Often known as “Earthships”, these sustainable and energy-efficient structures retain heat in cold weather, and stay cool in the summer!
- If you can get hold of an old tractor tyre, these make excellent climbing structures or sandpits for kids.
- attach to docks, jetties and harbours to prevent scratching the sides of boats when tied up there
Ok, so that might not add up to 101 but it’s a good start in a huge amount of uses for old tyres!
