National Tyre Safety Day
It’s national tyre safety day today, so take a minute to do the following quick checks on your vehicles tyres!
1) Tyre Tread Depth – Legal tread depth for tyres is over 1.6mm, although most tyre manufacturers advise you to have tread depth of over 3mm, as braking distances start to increase dramatically under 3mm. You can check your tread depth using a 20p piece (if the outer rim of the face of the coin is hidden by your tread, you’re legal).
2) Tyre Pressure – Check the correct inflation for your tyres by looking in your vehicle’s handbook and using a tyre pressure gauge. Most petrol stations have inflation machines which cost about 20p to use – easy!
3) Tyre Age – Check the age of your tyres (you can find out how to do this by reading our post: How Old Are Your Tyres?). If they’re over 6 years old, you should have them replaced immediately.
4) Tyre Health – Have a general look at the quality of your tyres. Check for nails or other debris that may be stuck in the rubber, any bulges or cuts, and don’t forget your pressure valves – cracked or damaged valves can let air escape your tyres, and allow dirt and dust to get into your tyres which will shorten their life.
5) Wheel Alignment – Is one of your tyres more worn down than the others? If so, you could need your alignment or balancing adjusted. A tyre specialist can do this for you as well as replacing or repairing your tyres.
And finally, make sure you buy high quality, low cost tyres from a Grippy tyre specialist, with great online prices and speedy service!
