Why Change to Winter Tyres?
According to recent research, less than 5% of motorists in the UK plan on purchasing winter tyres in 2011, despite the pattern of harsh winters in previous years.
This conflicts with reports from Continental, who – despite upping production according to increased demand – are warning European customers they may face a shortage of their winter tyres this year.
So why are we so reluctant to switch to winter tyres in Britain?
Despite over 90% of the survey respondents saying they would definitely drive in the snow, only 5% would use the correct tyres to do so. The reasons for deciding against winter tyres were that they were too expensive, that weather conditions didn’t justify a new set of tyres, and that over 15% of drivers didn’t really know what winter tyres are. Even more worrying, however, was the 63% who claimed they were skilful enough to handle driving in any weather conditions.
Perhaps then, it’s a case of awareness. At Grippy.co.uk, we think winter tyres are an important investment to keep you safe during the colder months, and here’s why:
- They needn’t be expensive or unaffordable, especially when you buy cheap winter tyres online. They can keep you on the road when your car might otherwise be stuck on the driveway, and can be used over several winters, so are a worthwhile investment.
- Regular tyres aren’t meant for driving in conditions below 7 degrees centigrade. Winter tyres are made from a special compound that retains its flexibility and grip on icy and slushy roads.
- Black ice, snow and wet roads all present dangerous driving conditions – no matter how experienced – and winter tyres are a serious asset when looking to reduce braking distance, improve traction and overall safety.
In Europe, winter tyres make up 20% of the replacement tyre market, and many countries recognise the importance of proper tyre fitting during the cold months. In Germany, Sweden, Finland and Austria, winter tyres are a requirement when driving in the winter, and the use of winter tyres is recommended by the governments of many other European countries.
The recurrence of harsh, extended winters in the UK suggests that we should be following suit, and preparing our vehicles safely and responsibly with winter tyres for the coming wintry weather.
