Will Winter Tyres Affect Your Insurance?
Last year, there was some confusion over the validity of car insurance when fitting winter tyres. This was because some companies claimed that this change in tyres was a modification that required higher cover or premium.
However, Simon Douglas, director of AA insurance, assures drivers that this is not the case and that winter tyres can be fitted without needing to inform your insurance provider or change your coverage.
Due to the increased snow and extended cold weather we’ve been experiencing the last few years, savvy motorists have chosen winter tyres to improve grip, handling and general safety through the winter. So long as your winter tyres meet the specifications of your vehicle, and are fitted by a tyre specialist, your insurance should not be affected.
Douglas explained: “It is ludicrous for an insurer to penalise a driver for fitting winter tyres, given that doing so both underlines a responsible approach to safety by the driver as well as reducing the likelihood of a collision. But if you do tell your insurer, there should be no change to your insurance premium.”
Winter tyres are the norm in countries with regularly harsh winters, and it looks as though they will soon become more popular in the UK with the deep snow we apparently have to look forward to in the following few months! Winter tyres can be fitted for you at any Grippy garage, so you can rest assured that driving on ice, snow and wet roads is a safe experience.
