Building Walls With Car Tyres
As car tyres are not biodegradable, they actually make a very (VERY!) long lasting building material. Something made of rubber with a hole in the middle may not seem like something you would use to create a sturdy structure, but simply by packing it full of earth renders it a strong building ‘brick’.
Ramming tyres full of earth uses a lot of human energy, but is obviously more environmentally friendly than the alternative of filling them with concrete. A single rammed earth tyre takes up to an hour to complete…at least until a machine is invented to do it for us. Once filled they can weigh up to 300 pounds, which is why they need to be made in situ.
Once the tyres are rammed with earth, they are stacked up in a staggered pattern just like laying standard bricks. Unlike standard bricks, they are resistant to fire, and have a larger load-bearing capacity. Even better, old car tyres can often be obtained for free, and you don’t need any special skills to build a wall out of them.
