More Uses For Old Car Tyres
Continuing with the environmental theme from earlier this week, if you have any old car tyres lying around here are a few ways you can repurpose them.
Have children or know someone with little ones? Tyres swings are fantastic fun and simple to make. Find a strong branch with a bit of chain or rope and away they go. Do ensure the tyre is cleaned throughly before hand to avoid any black stains on clothes. Alternatively set up an obstacle course around the garden with them. A huge tyre from a lorry or tractor would make a super sand pit!
If you’re a keen gardener a tyre can be turned into an instant planter. Stack them up on top of one another to make a high planter or use one on its own for a low and wide planter. Perfect for veggies that need continually earthing such as potatoes, or rhubarb which needs forcing. Layers can be added and removed when needed making them ideal.
Old tyres also make effective cold frames to protect young seedlings. With the tyre on the ground place a flat piece of wood or some slats on top of that. Add another tyre on top to act as the walls of the cold frame, then using an old window in its frame or a sheet of perspex or plastic as the roof to allow the sunlight in. Fill the lower tyre and the walls of the upper tyres with straw or a similar product if heat retention or extra insulation is required.
Why not turn an unworn tyre or two into a trug, great for carrying bits when you’re doing the gardening. Cut the tyre into sections and just add handles. With the leftover pieces use them as protective kneeling pads for when you’re doing planting in your used tyre planters and cold frames with the weeds going into your used tyre trug!
However you choose to reuse your tyres, ensure you purchase your cheap tyres online from Grippy.co.uk.
