New Tyre Labelling Legislation Coming in 2012
On 1 November 2012, European tyre labelling legislation will be introduced for car tyres. It aims to give the consumer clear information about fuel efficiency, wet grip and external noise. As such, the label is divided into three sections. The first shows the rolling resistance of the tyre. The lower that is, the lower the fuel consumption. Low fuel consumption reduces both CO2 emissions and the cost of driving.
The second section details the braking performance, or wet grip, of the tyre. Obviously, the better the braking performance, the sooner the car stops. Reducing stopping distance is a major factor in reducing the risk of accidents. The final section gives a measure in decibels of the noise produced by the tyres on the road.
These labels will enable consumers to make better choices about their car tyres. When the tyre’s rating is right there in front of you, showing you how safe and environmentally friendly it is, you’re more likely to choose the one with a better rating. Particularly if you also understand that those benefits will save you money.
