Premium vs Budget Car Tyres
When you are choosing which car tyres to fit to your car, the chances are you have wondered whether you would be better off choosing one of the budget brands. After all, how different can they really be? Well, as it turns out, quite a lot different.
In tests, budget tyres take longer to stop than premium car tyres. Not just a little bit longer, but driving at 70mph, in the wet, the stopping distance is an average of 14 metres longer than premium tyres’ stopping distance. That’s as long as an articulated lorry! Even in the dry, budget tyres’ stopping distance is 5 metres longer.
Similar results were shown on driving through corners (or swerving to avoid a collision) – the group of budget tyres did not perform as well as the group of premium tyres. In fact, even the noise in the cabin is less with the premium brands as they produce less road noise.
As tyres are the only part of the vehicle that has contact with the road, it really isn’t the place to save money by going for the budget tyres. It’s a much better idea to decide which premium brand you want and then shop around for the best price on those.
