When do you need new tyres?
Your tyres’ performance is essential to the overall safety and efficiency of your vehicle. Just like your feet get sore after a walk, your tyres take a bashing every time you drive your car. There comes a point when the performance begins to deteriorate. If your car is not gripping or handling as well in poor weather or is taking longer to stop when braking it’s most definitely time to get new tyres fitted with Grippy.
You, as the driver, are responsible for ensuring the tread on your tyre is not worn under the legal minimum requirement of 1.6 millimeters. Tyre gauges to check the tread depth are readily available on the market, however by using an old trick with a twenty pence piece it will give you a rough idea of how much tread depth you have left. Using a 20 pence coin insert it into the main tread grooves of your vehicle’s tyres. If
the outer rim of the coin is covered by the tread, this indicates sufficient
tread depth to be safe and legal. If the outer rim of the coin is visible, or if
you are not sure, have your tyres inspected by one of us here at Grippy.
Many tyre manufacturers mould tread wear indicator bars into the design of the tyres tread pattern, generally at the legal level of 1.6mm. To begin with these bars are barely visible, however as the tyres wear they become flush with the tyres tread. Once they reach this level you need to be buying some new tyres. By purchasing your tyres online you are likely to save yourself some money. We can fit them for you at one of our fitting centres or save you time by conveniently coming to you in one of our mobile vans.
It’s not just the treads that need to be checked. Your tyres’ sidewalls need to be regularly inspected for cracks, bulges and blisters. They can be a sign that your tyre is leaking or could potentially cause a blow out.
Tyre wear can be down to many different factors, not just usage and age. Over and under inflation, emergency braking and misaligned wheels are other causes of premature tyre wear.
Grippy, as a UK tyres online company, advise you to have a walk around your vehicle on a regular basis to check the tread and look out for wear and bulges. Your tyres’ pressure should ideally be checked each time you fill up with fuel.
