2011 Motor Sport round up
What a year 2011 has been for Motor Sport. With Red Bull Racing stealing the headlines for most of the F1 season and then continuing their success in the constructors Championship for the second year in a row! Sebastian Vettel is the Formula One World Champion and has broken several records in the process. The youngest driver to be on the podium so many times in one season, but Sebastian did not stop there. He also led the race for an amazing 739 of the 1139 total laps completed. Along with his 15 pole positions marking another record under his belt! Another massive change to the F1 season was car tyres manufacturer Pirelli tyres taking over from Bridgestone. Sebastian was the only driver to visit Pirelli to get an inside knowledge of F1 car tyres and to discover possible tactics to use for the forthcoming season. It certainly seems to have paid off!
The sad news of 2011 was the loss of a magnificent racing driver, Dan Wheldon. Dan was originally from Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire. Had he have completed and won the Indie car race he would have won a staggering 5 million dollar prize. The other famous fatality was Moto GP Marco Simoncelli. Marco had been in the Road Racing World Championship for ten years. Competing in the 125cc championship before going up to 250cc in 2006 he was promoted in 2010 again up to Moto GP where he looked to have a promising future. Our thoughts are with their families, may they rest in peace.
In World Rally Championship (WRC) Sebastien Loeb took the 2011 world title, with his co-driver Daniel Elena. In his super quick Citroen DS3 the 37 year old French man has had 66 wins in his 12 year career. This is his seventh successive WRC on the trot, so let’s keep an eye on his 2012 WRC season.
The final roundup is the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) which is sponsored by Dunlop. Matt Neal won the the BTCC for 2011. Matt, who is a staggering two metres tall (6ft 6) making him too tall to drive single seat racing cars, is also the managing director of his Father’s alloy wheel company. His other claim to fame is appearing on BBC2’s Top Gear driving a Mitsubishi L300 camper van where they had a race and smashed up the motor homes in style!
