Speed Ratings
Speed ratings; what do they mean? Speed ratings have been put on car tyres so that customers can buy suitable tyres for both their car type and their style of driving. Speed ratings range from 87 MPH to 186 MPH. They are based on scientific tests that are run on a set tyres every 6.2 MPH (10KM / hour) for ten minutes until the required speed has been met. Some van tyres are based on lower speed ratings as the end users may even limit the speed of the vehicle. Also with such a wide range of 4×4 tyres with varying uses, they will have a wide range of speed ratings to suit. A small low-powered 4×4 drive would need a different speed rating tyre to a turbo charged Range Rover.
Speed ratings are stamped on the side of every tyre. Every UK tyre has a string of certain letters and numbers on the side wall of the tyre, and it is worth checking that they are right on your tyres when you buy them. It has been discovered that some cheap online tyres are not genuine. In a test with real and fake Continental tyres it was found that the fake tyres had increased stopping distances. One of the key differences discovered between the real and fake tyres was the markings that should be on the sidewall of the tyre. The speed ratings are indicated by letters for example an ‘N’ speed rating is equal to 87 MPH. If you are driving a high powered or large engine vehicle this maybe deemed unsuitable. Tyre fitting by the dedicated experts at Grippy will ensure you know exactly which tyres you need.
