Trailer Tyres
Trailer tyres need to be checked regularly. Trailers and caravans unlike most car tyres are not used on a daily basis so it easy for damaged tyres to be missed. For most trailers and caravans the tyres do not necessarily wear out. They simply perish over the course of time, and this can make the tyre considerably weaker. As the driver of the vehicle it is your legal responsibility to check that the tyres on your trailer or caravan are legal. Failure to do so could result in a fine and penalty points on your license. With 3 penalty points per defective tyre it would be easy to rack up unwanted points. Penalty points would also mean higher insurance premiums next time around!
Checking your trailer tyres is the same as checking standard car or even van tyres. Make sure you look carefully at the side wall of the tyre. Inspecting the side wall of the tyre for cracks or splits which are a sure sign the tyre is perishing. As trailers or caravans generally take a fair weight a tyre that is cracked could easily lead to a blow out! Lots of trailers are fitted with cheap tyres which is OK as the wear on these tyres is generally not as high. The legal limit for the trailer and caravan tyres is the same as all UK tyres at 1.6mm. You can get a tyre expert to check your tyres to make sure that your tyres are legal.
