Tyre Cameras Revealed
A new device has been invented that can scan your car tyres‘ tread depth as the vehicle drives over a scanner. The process uses a system of high speed cameras and lasers to detect illegal car tyres in the UK and costs a staggering 50,000 euros, which is the best part of £44,000 pounds. The maker of this system ProContour, which is a German company, have been marketing the system to the UK police. The UK’s motoring organisations have said that whilst they see the benefits in making sure people are encouraged to drive on legal tyres, they said that it would be more advantageous to fill in pot holes than to purchase this system.
The association of chief police officers (ACPO) have seen this new technology in action. The ACPO are very much in favour of speed cameras. They were apparently very excited by this new scanner which can also accurately scan 4×4 tyres. Is this scheme a money spinner or really a safety related scheme? If this scanner was introduced it would undoubtedly make a fortune in fines. With penalty points a possibility as well this could be an expensive business for the unsuspecting driver.
Tyres must have 1.6 mm across 75% of the tyre to be legal. The tread bars that run across the tyre will give you a good indication of the tread left on the tyre. The tread bars are roughly at 2mm so if your tyres are close to this level they will need changing ASAP.
