Winter Driving Preparation
Winter driving is a totally different ball game to summer driving. Making sure your car is prepared for the cold season is vital. The reality is that being prepared could save you time, inconvenience and potentially your life! Surely it is worth a few minutes of your time to prepare for the winter. Car tyres should be checked for correct pressure and also make sure that tread depth is not just legal but at least at 3mm. The UK tyres limit is 1.6mm but in the winter months it is highly recommended to have at least 3mm. This helps with traction and also helps disperse the water in wet weather driving to help avoid aquaplaning.
Vehicle checks should include the following:
- All lights should be clean and working
- Battery should be fully charged
- Windscreen wipers should be in good condition not split or worn and the washer bottle should be full with the right mix of screen wash.
- Check all fluid levels in the engine.
Emergency kit that should be carried in the car and these include the following:
- A torch (do not forget to check the batteries)
- A tow rope
- A shovel (for travelling in snow)
- A blanket
- Wellington boots
- A Winter jacket
- A Hazard warning triangle
- A First aid kit
- Supply of food – ideally crisps or biscuits should you get stuck
Listening to the local radio stations during snow or frozen conditions is also advisable. This could save you hours of time from being stuck in traffic.
