The Construction Of Car Tyres
Car tyres have come a long way since they were originally developed. The original detachable pneumatic tyre was invented in 1891 by two brothers, the Michelin brothers. This simple detachable pneumatic tyre consisted of a vulcanised rubber tube bolted on to the rim of the wheel.
The first radial tyre, which is the type of tyre still in use today, wasn’t developed until 1948, but was also invented by the Michelin brothers. This revolutionary new design used steel-belted radial tyres. This offers increased mileage for your vehicle, as well as lengthening the lifespan of the tyres. Unfortunately it took a while to catch on as it needs the car to be fitted with a different suspension system, so it wasn’t as simple as just fitting it to the cars that were already on the roads. It may have taken a while to catch on, but this tyre, together with the pneumatic tyre invented by Dunlop, is what led to the car tyres we use today.
