The Geneva Motor Show 2012
2012’s Geneva Motor Show is half way through, and is showcasing the biggest debuts for concept cars, production cars and the latest eco developments.
From the ostentatious 80s throwback looks of the Lamborghini Aventador J, to the signature boxy lines of the Bentley EXP 9 F (complete with a James Bond-esque leather-clad fold-out picnic area), the design and plain madness of the concept cars is as high standard as ever.
And at the other end of the scale, the green-cars and hybrids – now a central aspect of every modern motor show – do not disappoint either. Renault showed off the Zoe, a battery-powered ‘mousey’ looking little supermini, which promises to be the cheapest EV on the market at just £13,650. Not only that but it has the longest range, with 130 miles to a single charge. CEO Carlos Ghosn is sticking to his prediction that 20% of Renault and Nissan vehicles are destined to ‘go electric’ within the next decade, based on research that claims over half of 18-30 year olds prefer green cars.
And it’s the small car market that seems to be the way forward. Overall sales in Europe are down by 7% and premium manufacturers are responding to consumer’s demand for the environmentally friendly and safe family car. Fiat, Renault and Peugeot have all felt the sting of fewer sales in the last few years, with their most popular ranges being small, cheap models.
The Geneva Motor Show continues until the 18th of March, and you can find out more about all the exhibits and events here.
