Bahrain Grand Prix Overshadowed By Angry Protesters
It seemed touch and go for a while whether or not the race in Bahrain would go ahead with protesters trying their best to disrupt it and focus the world’s attention on the repression in their country. The race did manage to go ahead as planned, but there was a wealth of security in place to ensure that the cars could race without being disturbed.
Instead of the usual fans and TV cameras, the Bahrain International Circuit at Sakhir was surrounded by troops, armoured vehicles and even sniffer dogs to keep the protesters under control. Despite all that, Sebastian Vettel, reigning Formula 1 world champion, managed to stay calm and win the race! Instead of protesters’ fires, it was Formula One tyres sending black smoke into the skies.
We hope the discord will die down soon, but with plans to hold another rally today in support of an opposition leader currently on hunger strike in jail, it seems like it’ll carry on for a while longer.
