Fleet managers advised to save fuel by inflating tyres properly
That’s it really! Regular readers will of course know that ensuring car tyres are correctly inflated saves fuel (and improves the tyres’ longevity, driving efficiency and braking distances!), but fleet managers are now being advised to make sure their drivers are aware of the need to check tyre pressures.
The motoring not-for-profit organisation TyreSafe says that a tyre which is under-inflated by 20 per cent can result in a 3 per cent rise in fuel consumption for the car. That may seem like a small amount, but when you consider the current price of fuel, it’s not insignificant. For fleet drivers in particular, that 3 per cent across a whole fleet can really add up! Especially when you consider that fleet drivers often have a higher mileage than the average driver.
Checking your tyre pressure doesn’t take long, but the benefits can be huge, both for the driver/bill-payer in the form of reduced fuel costs, less frequent tyre changes and shorter braking distances, and for the environment with reduced CO2 emissions.
