Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Tyres
We’ve mentioned before that tyres are the only product that currently need to be completely reused or recycled (as they aren’t allowed to be dumped or added to landfill), and shared a few different uses for tyres. But is there anything you can do yourselves?
- Reduce – this one is fairly easy. Just drive a bit more carefully; no sudden changes in speed or direction. Smooth accelerating and braking, and driving around corners sensibly, will extend the life of your car. Also, making sure that you are driving on the correct tyre pressures (which will vary depending on the load you are carrying) will make them last longer and help prevent any damage that could cause a sudden blow out.
- Reuse – You can easily use your old tyres to make raised beds for your garden. They can be stacked high enough so that you don’t have to bend down, or a single tyre can be used if you don’t mind kneeling. You can even place them onto a sheet of wood or stiff plastic so that you can rearrange your garden whenever you want!
- Recycle – This is one that is best left to the professionals. Specialist companies will shred the tyres and the resulting granules are used as sports surfaces, or in children’s play areas, as they provide a softer, bouncier landing!
