Lack Of Driver Knowledge About Spare Tyres
There was a time when practically all cars had a spare wheel and tyre as standard. These days you are just as likely to have a puncture repair kit, a space saver spare, or have a car fitted with run flat tyres. Unfortunately the variety of possibilities seems to have caused some confusion amongst British drivers.
A recent survey has shown that 4 per cent of drivers aren’t aware whether or not their car has a spare wheel! 10 per cent who do have a spare, don’t have the correct tools in their car to fit it in an emergency while a massive 36 per cent have the tools but don’t know how to use them.
Familiarising yourself with various parts of your car, including the presence of absence of a spare wheel, is something that every car owner should do. It is your responsibility, from a safety perspective, to keep your car well maintained, and you can’t do that if you don’t know where certain parts (like where to fill up with oil or water, where your car battery is, and what provisions you have in your car for dealing with a punctured tyre) are.
