Young Drivers Not Getting Their Car Serviced
In a recent car maintenance habits survey it appears that young drivers don’t understand the importance of regular car servicing, and are missing services either because of cost, or because they just don’t realise they are supposed to service their cars. 34 % even felt that as long as the car passed its MOT, it was okay. Out of the total amount of people choosing not to service their car, 57% were between the ages of 17 and 30, so the issue is more prevalent amongst young people.
Servicing your car regularly is an important part of car maintenance along with checking your fluid levels and your car tyres. While an MOT checks various safety issues, it is not a comprehensive check of the roadworthiness of your car like a service in, and during a service, certain parts will routinely be replaced according to your vehicle’s service schedule.
An AA patrolman has a theory that young people are accustomed to using things until they break and then just replacing it with a newer version, which negates the need for maintenance. Sadly, not many of us could afford to do this with our cars! It is important that you regularly check your vehicle yourself (in particular tyre treads and tyre pressures), and have a professional service carried out according to your vehicle’s requirements.
