Tyre cameras set to arrive in the UK?
At a first glance it appears to look like a grate on the road but it is in fact a highly sophisticated scanner that has the facility to detect a vehicle’s tyre tread depth as it passes through it. Monitoring whether the tyres are in fact legal to be on the road this new device could soon be seen all over the UK.
The advanced piece of equipment uses several high-speed cameras and lasers to measure the exact depth of each tyres groove. If the central 75 per cent of the tyre has less than 1.6mm of tread an alert warning sound is triggered.
Trevor Hall, an advisor on road policing enforcement technology and a well known advocate of speed cameras was shown the £43,000 device during a recent visit to the maker ProContour who are based in Germany. According to the company’s marketing director Mr Hall was ‘quite excited’ about the product.
