Mystery of car tyres washed up on a beach
A mystery remains in Granton in Scotland as to how a beach ended up with hundreds of worn and used tyres over the Christmas period. Residents of Wardie Bay discovered 250 tyres, many of them covered in barnacles. This is an indication that they had been in the water for some time before being washed ashore, however some of the tyres showed very little exposure to the sea. It is still unknown how they appeared but flytipping is a strong possibility.
The community came together and were soon clearing up the tyres, gathering them into a pile at the top of the beach in readiness for the council to take away. However there has since been some dispute over who owns the land and responsibility of clearing the load.
Ward Councillor for the area and City deputy leader Steve Cardownie advised residents that the tyres would be taken away swiftly regardless of which agency was responsible for the clean-up. He also suggested that for so many vehicle tyres to end up washed ashore in one tide that a vessel could possibly have lost some of its load.
By law all UK tyres should be recycled, reused or re-purposed. As part of our tyre fitting service in and around Milton Keynes we recycle all of our customers’ old tyres.
