Asymmetric Tyres
Unlike standard car tyres which feature a symmetrical pattern over the entire width of the tyre which is the same, the pattern of the tread on a car tyre that is asymmetric differs with the various parts adapting to suit certain functions.
These consist of smaller inner tread blocks which assist in pushing and shifting water in order to improve the grip handling, whilst the outer edge blocks are harder and larger to aid with cornering. There is a continuous rib around the middle of the tread which improves the straight line stability.
It is important to ensure that asymmetric car tyres are fitted the correct way round onto the wheel, and on the correct side of the vehicle, otherwise there will be no benefit to the arrangement of the tread block. If they are fitted wrongly it can lead to a failed MOT test. There are clear marking on the sidewalls to assist with this.
