Pirelli Seeks Tyre Rule Change
Pirelli is seeking to change the tyre allocation numbers for 2012’s F1 events to prevent wasted sets after each race weekend.
Once these harder compound tyres have been mounted on hubs (done pre-event), even if they’ve not been used, they still have to be destroyed after Sunday night. Clearly, this is a great waste, although teams have been reluctant to Pirelli’s suggestions so far.
Pirelli’s motorsport director, Paul Hembery, is therefore making a special effort to convince teams to get on board with the rule alterations:
“They would like us to take 2,500 tyres around the world all year and not use them […] There is no movement on it yet, and I will have a go with the teams again. We need to go with the team principals and give them all the facts from the season so far, and say; maybe we can use them on Friday, so teams have an extra set on Friday morning.
“They do a lot of development work on a Friday so maybe that is a way of doing it. I am sure common sense will prevail.”
Pirelli is taking next year’s F1 tyre situation very seriously, while also making radical and aggressive choices during the 2011 Japanese and Korean GP.
Hembery explains: “We don’t have testing so sometimes we are going to push things, and it will make it easier if the championship is decided. We need to understand that for next season to make our choice aggressive again.”
