Michelin Showing Children Their Factory
As part of a government initiative called ‘See Inside Manufacturing’, Michelin have been running tours of their Stoke tyre factory for local schoolchildren. The intention is that visits like these will increase the number of apprenticeships that are taken up by 250,000.
The visits last for four hours and involve a tour around the factory and a speech from the Factory Manager followed by watching a series of videos about the company. The children will also have the opportunity to take part in certain interactive tasks in small teams. This will help them to understand what happens at the factory, and what type of jobs are available to them with different qualifications. After the tasks have been completed, and the pupils have given a presentation in their teams, they are given some feedback, and a prize is awarded to the best team.
The automotive industry is the first to do these type of visits as part of the See Inside Manufacturing initiative. Michelin have commented that the visits were also good for them to raise awareness amongst pupils of the variety of interesting jobs that are available to them in the manufacturing of tyres.
