Pirelli reveal this year’s FI tyres
Pirelli are the exclusive tyre supplier to Formula One between 2011 and 2013, and have revealed the tyres to be nominated for next month’s Grand Prix in Japan and Korea.
For Japan, P Zero White medium and P Zero Yellow soft tyres will be chosen to suit the Suzaka circuit, with its fast and medium corners. In Korea, P Zero Yellow soft and P Zero Red Supersoft are on the agenda for the twisty, low-grip circuit – the same combination that is used for Canada, Hungary, Monaco, and Singapore.
Pirelli’s motorsport director, Paul Hembery, claimed the Supersoft as “one of the most dynamic tyres in our range”, and explained how – on the mostly unfamiliar track – its extra performance should “form a key part of the strategy in Korea.” The newly completed track in Yeongam, South Korea, is 5.621km long, with 18 testing turns, with a top lap time of 1.50.257 held by Fernando Alonso for Ferrari in 2010.
The Suzaka circuit was originally created as a test track for Honda, and is one of the few figure of eight racing tracks in the world. 5.807km long, with 17 turns, the Suzaka lap record is currently held by Kimi Räikkönen for McLaren in 2005 with 1.31.540.
