Nitrogen Tyre Inflation
Nitrogen tyre inflation can bring many benefits to your driving experience and the longevity and performance of your tyres. It’s been called a ‘fad’ for a long time now, but the popularity of nitrogen tyre inflation doesn’t seem to be waning.
The benefits of using nitrogen instead of compressed air in your tyres include:
- Tyres hold their pressure longer due to the reduced mass and larger molecules of nitrogen, meaning it diffuses through the walls of the tyre slower than air does. A study conducted by the University of Bologna concluded that nitrogen inflated tyres lose pressure at approximately half the rate of air-inflated tyres. Because of this extended inflation, nitrogen tyres also run cooler.
- Reduced oxidation on the rim and inner-liner of the tyre. Air contains around 20% oxygen, whereas nitrogen inflated tyres contain practically none. The less oxygen, the less oxidisation.
- Tyre life is increased by up to 25%. Since the tyre stays inflated for longer, there is less rolling resistance, which in turn extends the life of the tyre, reduces tread wear and provides better fuel economy.
- Save money on fuel! All the reasons above mean that you will get more miles out of your gallon!
- Better handling – although most of us won’t be driving on an F1 track any time soon, the reasons for nitrogen inflated tyres are based in success with its use in racing tyres, where every fraction of a second counts and ease of manoeuvring is key. Better-inflated tyres will improve the handling of your car and ultimately give you a smoother drive.
Nitrogen tyre inflation is quick, simple and inexpensive, and can be used on any car, van, truck or motorbike tyres. Visit us at Grippy to find out more about saving money and extending the life of your tyres with nitrogen inflation.
