Pirelli P-Zero Tyres
Pirelli was founded by Giovanni Pirelli nearly 140 years ago, making its first car tyres 110 years ago. With rapid expansion over the following 20 years from 1901, Pirelli had plants in Spain, Argentina and from 1914 UK tyres were being produced. Prior to making car tyres Pirelli made insulated and underwater telegraph cable. It then did not take long for Pirelli to show an interest in motor sports.
Now with Pirelli holding a three year contract in their hands with F1 there really is no better time to see Pirelli’s tyre technologies. As any F1 enthusiast would know tyre strategies can win or lose races! The formula one teams have to work out which is the best tyre to fit depending on weather conditions and tyre wear. Tyre fitting in the pit stops is done in seconds! The teams also have to keep an eye on the other teams’ strategies as they can see what happens to the other drivers. So when your favourite driver wins the race this really is a team win not just an individual. Maclaren boss Martin Whitmarsh has said he wants Pirelli to give the teams ‘more headaches’ to improve the show. Martin went on to say “I think the tyres in terms of durability and derogation have got disturbingly better as the year has gone on, I think we would like to give them the challenge of making higher derogation tyres to give us a bit more of a headache”. This back handed compliment just shows how good these tyres are when an F1 team boss wants Pirelli to make things harder!
