Top 5 Tyre Care Tips
It is very important to take care of your car tyres as they are your only point of contact with the road surface. Your car tyres are what is keeping you on the road! Here are our top five tips for keeping those tyres in top condition.
- Check tyres for wear regularly – the legal minimum tread is 1.6mm, but you should replace them before they get to that point. Higher tread depth allows the grooves to disperse more water from beneath the tyres, reducing the risk of aquaplaning on wet roads.
- Check tyre pressures monthly – driving with tyres inflated to the wrong pressure is dangerous and damaging to the tyres. You will save fuel and extend the life of your tyres by checking tyre pressure regularly, and before any long journeys.
- Replace tyre valves when you replace the tyre – as they are usually made of rubber, the valves are subject to deterioration. If cracks form they can allow air to escape from the tyres. A tyre valve and valve cap in good condition will prevent particles of dirt or dust getting into your tyres and shortening their life.
- Repair any punctures promptly – any repairs should be carried out by a professional who will be able to inform you if their is any internal damage, and ensure that they are only repaired if they will be road legal.
- Make sure your wheels are balanced and the suspension alignment is correct – If your tyres are wearing unevenly they may need balancing, or your suspension may be out of alignment. Having these checked professionally if you notice any unusual wear, or the tyre is bumped into a kerb or a pothole.
